NEW Year's Eve is a special time in Melbourne and this year there will be a major family celebration in Yarra Park.

We will have live entertainment on the main stage and the usual favourites such as carnival rides and face painting. We expect up to 50,000 people to celebrate as families, finishing with the fireworks at 9.30pm.

There is also a major party at Docklands, (Why not stay at Accommodation Star Docklands Apartments) where tens of thousands of people will enjoy fireworks at 9.30pm and midnight. You can always check for updates on our facebook page Accommodation Star Docklands.

And there's the big party that is New Year's Eve in the city. About 500,000 people come in to the city to enjoy fireworks, projections on buildings and the feeling of a new start to a new year.

This year we think we have the key to defining a "Melbourne moment", that stroke of midnight when the New Year begins and Melbourne celebrates in its own way.

At midnight, Melbourne will turn gold. Seventeen buildings will shoot fireworks that will rain a gold leaf pattern down on to our city.

You might think that most of the action is in the CBD, but stroll across Princes Bridge and you’ll find lots of things happening south of the Yarra. This Friday is Remembrance Day, marking the anniversary of the armistice which ended World War I. If you’ve been meaning to visit the Shrine, the Remembrance Day Ceremony is a very worthwhile experience. Afterwards, take a look around Southbank and the new, bright, bold Southgate.

Friday 11 November
Members of the public are invited to attend the Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. The commemorative service incorporates a formal military parade, one minute’s silence at 11am, a flyover of RAAF Museum aircraft, and the Remembrance Day address by the Governor of Victoria. Visitors are also invited to lay a poppy in the field of poppies located near the Shrine's Eternal Flame from 1 November to 11 November. Messages can be attached to poppies and sent to the Shrine or personally planted in the field of poppies.

Southgate Fiesta

Friday 11 November to Sunday 13 November
Head down to Southbank to see the new Southgate unveiled at the official opening weekend fiesta. Southgate has been transformed into a vibrant restaurant and shopping destination. Celebrate with sunset salsa dance classes and live music on Southbank Promenade, spectacular aerial and street theatre performances, behind-the-scenes restaurant and retailer tours, special offers, dining and shopping events and more. Animal Farm

The animal farm is returning to Harbour Town Shopping Centre these school holidays. Many of your favourite furry little friends including piglets, calves, chickens, rabbits and lambs will be in the farmyard looking for a big cuddle and a pat. Don't forget to bring your camera along to get some great photos with the animals and best thing is it's FREE!!

Ice-skating World Record Attempt

Shocklands Street Skate Contest
Come and see Australia's best street skateboarders on Saturday 9th July, showcasing Australia’s most ‘legit’ street skaters doing what they would do on the daily.

Located at Shed 4 at Docklands, Shocklands obstacles reflect the kinds found, and made, by skaters in our cities, industrial areas, schoolyards and abandoned warehouses.

Melbourne has a thriving live music scene, arguably the best in the country.

Docklands might not be the first thought for people looking for live music, however Two Tone Family Sedan, a duo of Bobby Valentine and daughter Laura Gillard have put Docklands firmly on the list of places to visit for live music.

Two Tone Family Sedan has started playing Thursday nights at The Lounge on NewQuay Promenade. The Lounge is a great setting to either enjoy the music while sitting down for dinner or viewing from the bar with a cold drink.

The beauty behind this duo is the simplicity. The instrumentation is two vocals and acoustic guitar, which means the arrangements are simple and the focus is on melody.

You would think that playing covers of Bob Marley, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and plenty more would prove difficult for a duo. It’s simply not the case here with two extremely strong voices providing a unique stripped back feel to these popular classics.

Valentine’s guitar playing is also something that can’t be ignored. It provides the perfect platform for the vocals to be priority, while also throwing in the occasional solo.

The thing that really stands out about Valentine and Gillard is how well their voices work in unison. The most enjoyable moments are when their voices come together and harmonise. It is an aspect of live music that is always appreciated and this duo nail their harmonies every time.

Seeing Two Tone Family Sedan at The Lounge is part of that long-standing Melbourne tradition of going down to the local pub to see live music while enjoying the company of your friends.

Taking knitting to a new level were Otto and Spike with the coziest looking hats and scarves. Their traditional techniques mix with a modern, off-beat feel to create inspired textural pieces.
Colour was bold, as we have been seeing a lot of this season, and their bright prints use motifs inspired by street signs and the culture of Melbourne’s Brunswick.
Their “local” scarf lists numerous signs of restaurants and locations in Lygon St and Sydney Rd, showing an intimate knowledge of the area and creating a sense of community that you can wrap warmly around your neck.
Another stand-out from the market and a key look this season was the cape, made by the team at Encouragement Award. The Little Red Riding Hood-inspired design is a perfect trans-seasonal piece – layer with some cosy merino wool, long-sleeve tops to keep yourself nice and warm, or pop the detachable hood.
Encouragement Award creator Nikki Jones is one Melburnian who loves winter.
“I think we are all really spoilt when it comes to winter fashion in Melbourne because there are so many clever designers making beautiful scarfs, knitted socks, jackets and everything you could ever need,” Nikki said.
The Melbourne Finders Keepers market follows a growing trend of consumers who are looking for a handmade local option in fashion. As many stall-holders heralded the craft revival, it seems sitting by a fireplace, knitting a chunky red scarf could be the perfect idea for the upcoming winter.

How to book tickets - SPECIAL PROCESS FOR MEMBERS ONLY
To avoid disappointment, you must purchase tickets in advance. Unlike other exhibitions, there will be no allocation held back for onsite purchase. This means that to guarantee a ticket, you must pre-book. There are two ways to buy your tickets at the MV member ticket price: online or over the phone.
Online
There is a special process for MV Members who want to buy their tickets online. The process is outlined in detail below.
Visit the special MV Members booking page. You must use this link as you will not be able to access the member prices if you go through the main Ticketek website.
Click 'Buy Now' in the horizontal navigation bar.
Select a date and time from the drop down calendar. Click ‘Get tickets’.
Choose how many tickets you would like.
Choose your delivery option. Transaction fees start from $4.95 per booking depending upon your choice of ticket delivery.
You will be prompted to log into or join Ticketek.
Select if you’d like to include the Egypt 3D movie and/or Audio Tour.
Organise payment.

MV Members can call Ticketek on 13 28 49 and ask for the MV Member price. A transaction fee of $6.50 per booking applies. Tickets will be mailed out.

Important information
To be eligible for the MV Member discount you will need to present a current MV Members card together with photo identification when visiting the exhibition. Access to the Members and VIP Access queue will not be permitted without this identification.
Proof of entitlement is also required for Concession membership holders.
When selecting a time, consider that you will enter the exhibition within a half hour window from your nominated time. For example, if you purchase a ticket for April 8, 2011, at 10:00am, you will enter between 10:00am and 10:30am.

Alyssa Novitski is off to London in June after winning Destination Docklands’ recent “why I love Docklands” competition.
As the winner of the $13,000 first prize, the Ringwood receptionist will be taking her husband and two best friends.
Entrants had to submit in 50 words or less what they loved about Docklands.
Alyssa, who is a regular visitor to Harbour Town Shopping Centre, had an idea for a tour of Docklands in a board game format highlighting our amazing activities, shops, restaurants and more. She wrote:
“With shopping and food and fun galore
There’s so much to do you’ll come back for more
A game for all ages so drop all your plans
As we take you on a tour of our favourite Docklands!”
Destination Docklands’ executive officer Michelle Kemp reported that Alyssa could not believe it when phoned and told the news.
“She was so excited but could not make much noise because she works as a receptionist!” Ms Kemp said. “She said her family had never won anything and she had never been overseas before.”
Second-prize winner Mario Chrisanthou submitted this fabulous rhyme outlining everything his family loves about Docklands:

The 'Places We Go' dream was born more than a decade ago, when co-founders Jen and Daniel were both cadets at Victoria's regional TV network WIN TV, both dreaming about 'one day travelling the world and making TV..."

After a decade of going about their own careers, they went to Everest for almost 3 months in 2005 and produced a documentary called "Everest – Unfinished Business". It followed the story of 3 Victorian policemen who climbed Mt Everest in honour of the late Superintendent Paul Carr, head of the Victoria Police Special Operations Group, who died while training for the climb.

It was there that they sat on a rock at Base Camp, Mt Everest (as there are only rocks to actually sit on!!) and decided it was time to go on the 'Places We Go' journey. Jen and Daniel came home from Nepal, quit their jobs with major networks and started on their next big adventure. They have gathered a small, but amazingly talented team filled with the passion of travel…and 'Places We Go' was born.
